Cień lata — Aliaksandr Veledzimovich

Zdjęcia do projektu „Cień lata” powstawały w latach 2012–2020. Chciałem przez nie wrócić do dzieciństwa i zrekonstruować własne wspomnienia.

W tej podróży tworzyłem instalacje w miejscach zapamiętanych z tamtych lat, szukałem przedmiotów z końca XX wieku – fotografii, żołnierzyków, granatu, kart do gry – lub odnajdywałem pejzaże, które prawie się nie zmieniły. Starałem się tworzyć te obrazy jak najdokładniej, a jednocześnie w niektóre kadry wpisywałem swój podpis i faktyczną datę, by zakwestionować dokumentalny charakter fotografii.

Próbowałem uchwycić przeszłość, ale jak sfotografować coś, co nie istnieje – wspomnienie? Roland Barthes pisał, że fotografia zawsze traktuje o tym, co było. Jednak paradoksalnie moje zdjęcia zniekształcają moje realne wspomnienia i moją prawdziwą przeszłość. Buduję świat fikcyjny, równoległą rzeczywistość, w której zbiorowa przeszłość miesza się z rozmytymi fragmentami mojej własnej pamięci.

W efekcie nie potrafię już oddzielić dorastania na Białorusi w latach 90. od tego, co widziałem w filmach i czytałem w książkach. Pamiętam lato na obozie pionierskim i to, jak malowałem twarz, udając Jima Carrey’a, ale nie umiem z pewnością stwierdzić, czy widziałem medale wojenne na marynarce mojego pradziadka.

Każda próba rekonstrukcji wspomnień przez obraz staje się metaforą samej natury fotografii. W momencie naciśnięcia migawki teraźniejszość natychmiast zmienia się w przeszłość, a moje dzieciństwo na chwilę ożywa. To bliskie perspektywie André Rouillé, według którego każde zdjęcie zawiera w sobie zarówno „przeszłość” fotografa, jak i „teraźniejszość” przed obiektywem. Ale fotografia niesie też „przyszłość”, która ujawnia się, gdy widz styka się z obrazem.

W ten sposób konstruuję „przeszłość” z „teraźniejszości” dla „przyszłości”.

Albo jest to tylko próba sfotografowania Niewidzialnego.

The Shadow of Summer

The photos from the project „The Shadow of Summer” were taken between 2012 and 2020. Through them, I wanted to return to my childhood and recreating my memories.

On this journey, I created installations in places from my childhood, searched for objects On this journey, I created installations in places from my childhood, searched for objects from the end of XX century — photographs, toy sailors, a hand grenade, playing cards, etc. — or found landscapes that had hardly changed. I tried to create images as accurately as possible, yet at the same time, I incorporated my own artistic signature and the actual year of creation into some photographs to challenge the documentary nature of photography.

I attempted to capture the past, but how can I photograph something that doesn’t exist, like a memory? Roland Barthes once said that a photograph is always about the past. Yet, paradoxically, my photos distort my real memories and my true past. I construct a fictional world, a parallel reality, blending the collective past with blurred fragments of my own memory.

In the end, I can no longer separate my experience of growing up in Belarus in the 1990s from what I saw in films and read in books. I remember summers at pioneer camp and how I painted my face imitating Jim Carrey, but I cannot say for sure whether I ever saw medals from the Second World War on my great-grandfather’s jacket.

Each attempt to reconstruct my childhood memories through images becomes a direct metaphor for the nature of photography itself. The moment I press the shutter, the present instantly turns into the past, and my childhood is momentarily brought to life. This idea closely aligns with André Rouillé’s perspective that every photograph contains both the photographer’s „past” and the „present” in front of the lens. But a photograph also carries a “future”, revealed when the viewer encounters the image.

In this way, I construct a „past” from the „present” for the „future.”

Or it just an attempt to photograph the Unseen.
